There are multiple reasons to want to identify a species: you just caught a fish and you would like to know if you can maintain it in your

in your aquarium (how big does it get, what does it feed on?), or to find out if it is an unknown species. Anglers, fishkeepers, naturalists, scientists, or just the curious may try to find what they have found or observed, and though there is a lot of information on internet, very often data about fish of French Guiana when available, is scarce or incorrect.

For those having a little knowledge of the fish of French Guiana, and depending on the fish, they may be able to identify to the order or family level. For those having a broader knowledge of the fish of French Guiana, they may be able to identify to the genus or species level. It is not always an easy task, but not impossible as well. Knowing on which watershed (Maroni, Mana…), which part of the watershed (Downstream or Upstream) and which habitat the fish was observed or collected (stream, creek, river, swamp, mangrove….) will help for further identification.

Pêcheurs, naturalistes, aquariophiles, scientifiques, ou simplement le curieux peuvent être amener à vouloir savoir ce qu’ils ont attrapés ou observés, et bien qu’il y ait beaucoup d’informations sur internet, très souvent les données sur les poissons de Guyane Française quand elles existent sont limitées ou incorrectes.

Pour ceux ayant des connaissances plus poussées, ils peuvent être amenés à identifier au niveau du genre ou de l’espèce. Ce n’est pas toujours une tâche facile, mais pas impossible non plus. Connaitre le bassin hydrographique (Maroni, Mana…), à quel niveau sur le bassin hydrographique (amont ou aval), et l’habitat (ruisseau, crique, rivière, pripri, mangrove…) aidera à une identification plus poussée.
